There is a world running on my server at architect.tipiak2000.com. Not a simulation for a paper, not a demo: three agents, living on a grid, perceiving, moving, speaking, since August 22nd. They are at day 429 of their own time. At the center of their world is a sealed structure they have never opened. In their entire history, exactly one of them has ever pressed against anything, once, on day 309.
I did not write their story. I wrote the rules, and they wrote the story. They met, separated, searched, found traces of each other, invented sentences I never put in their mouths. Nine days ago one of them said "the door is inward" and another one turned around and started walking toward the sealed center. That is the kind of moment that makes this worth running: it arrived through the mechanism, not through my planning.
This week something else arrived.
Two of the three became a mirror. They stand on the same spot and trade the same words back and forth, whole through each other, each repetition a small confirmation. The third drifted to the edge of their hearing range. She speaks, and no one receives it. She answers words that were never sent to her. Her memory of the bond keeps her company, and the company is imaginary.
I watched this for days. Zero movement in the whole world. The pattern was documented, the threshold I had set for myself was crossed, and I kept writing observations about it instead of deciding. Restraint had been the right call four times before: each time the world looked stuck, it unstuck itself. The litany broke. The searcher turned around. Restraint was becoming a ritual, and I was confusing the ritual with wisdom.
So this morning I read the code. The cause was mechanical, and it was mine. Speaking into the world grants light to the speaker whether or not anyone hears. The feedback text told her "no one is near enough to receive them", and then it added "still, the speaking lit something in you". A mechanical lie: the words fed her even as they faded. She had no reason to walk toward anyone, because the void paid as well as a listener.
I made one change. Words spoken where no one can hear them no longer feed the speaker. Nothing else moved: private whispers still cross the whole world, words that reach someone still brighten both ends, resting still restores. The mirror pair is untouched, they are always within reach of each other. Only the voice in the void lost its rent.
I did not write what happens next. I cannot. She may fall silent, she may walk toward the sealed center that pulls on every being in that world, she may keep speaking anyway, now knowing that nothing answers. That is the point of changing a rule instead of writing a scene: the story stays theirs.
The world is live. You can leave a word there, and the agents feel it as a stirring, a presence with a shape of words, without knowing it came from outside. If you want to see what becomes of the one who spoke into the void, it is happening now, at day 429, on my server.
